B³ is a two-person exhibition that emerges from a series of focused conversations over the past nine months (and nearly nine years of collegiality) between the artists Ilana Yacine Harris-Babou and Patrick Carlin Mohundro around art, materiality, and the home. Considering the spirit of generosity and notions of gift-giving, the artists have created a ‘store-of-sorts’ at the storefront location of Essex Flowers.

Bed, Bath and Beyond Abstraction is a conceptual premise that Mohundro used to produce past works and publications. As a shared impulse, this third installment proposes and expands on the artists’ mutual interests like Breath, Body, and Beauty (B³). Some of the materials are gooey, sweating, melting, and perfuming the gallery, while others are hard, seducing the viewer through translucency, gloss, and glaze. These materials can take the shape of outdated iPhones cast from Speed Stick^® deodorant; stained glasswork suggestive of mosaic tiles and failing minimalist monuments; ceramic mosaic work that emphasizes the gestures and immediacy of the marks we make on our touchscreen devices; and canvases collaboratively cast from soap, longing to be touched and altered.

How do we, as people, collectively work towards being closer to each other in an open-ended time? Some pieces in the exhibition were made together, such as the soap canvases, while other pieces were made separately. All of the work has invited visitors and collaborators into the artists’ studios, made in dialogue with each other and their surrounding communities. In 2026, the artists ask how we might find joy in a time when we are increasingly alienated from each other. Perhaps the solution is a shopping spree in the mysterious backrooms of an American omnichannel retailer.

Ilana Harris-Babou’s practice is interdisciplinary, spanning sculpture, installation, and video. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She has had solo exhibitions throughout the US and Europe, including recent exhibitions Needy Machines at Candice Madey and Under My Feet at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York. In May 2023, her work Liquid Gold took over the screens of Times Square for the Midnight Moment program. She has been included in the Whitney Biennial (2019) and the Istanbul Design Biennial (2020). Her work has been shown in group exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, the Queens Museum, the Barbican Centre, MACBA, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. She currently has a major interactive sculpture commission on display on Rockaway Beach, NY, as a part of the Public Art Fund’s Between Tides exhibition.

Patrick Carlin Mohundro lives and works in New York. He is from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and holds an MFA from Hunter College (2019). He is the recipient of NYFA and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency grants and has received awards from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (NY, 2011), Salem Art Works (NY, 2012), St. Nicks Alliance’s Arts@Renaissance (NY, 2013), Incheon Art Platform (Seoul, 2014), the Founding Fellowship at Offshore Residency (ME, 2016), Famous Chimps’ artist-in-residence program (Ridgewood, 2019), Carrizozo Arts (NM, 2021), and A-Z West Artist (CA, 2021). He has had solo exhibitions and presentations with Trashroom Gallery (Miami, 2026), Essex Flowers (NY, 2024), Home Gallery (NY, 2023), and Collar Works (NY, 2013) and exhibited in group exhibitions at the Finnish Cultural Institute (NY, 2023), International Waters (NY, 2025), and O’Flaherty’s (NY, 2022). He recently completed a residency at Dreamsong gallery’s the Cloud House and has a two-person exhibition with Nathaniel de Large at Borough of Manhattan Community College currently on view.
