JANINE POLAK
Inside OutSeptember 7 – October 7, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, September 7, 6-8 PM
Essex Flowers is pleased to present Inside Out, an exhibition of new work by Janine Polak. This will be the inaugural exhibition in the back space.
The exhibition will feature a set of prints and sculptures investigating the positive/negative relationship of processes like monoprinting, “slip dipping” porcelain clay, mold-making, and casting. Preserved in a gestural moment, the work suggests the corporeal, leaving only a trace of what was once there. Wrinkles and smudges point to vulnerability and usage. The reimagining of mundane objects like straws, hot dogs, and socks humorously explore duality, comfort, and intimacy.
Janine Polak earned a BA from the University of Virginia and an MFA from the Yale University School of Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US including at Essex Flowers, NYC; Brennan & Griffin, NYC; Equity Gallery, NYC; TSA NYC; Sculpture Space NYC,; Sardine, Brooklyn; Scott Charmin, Houston; and internationally in China and Australia. She currently lives and works in Queens, New York.
